For Organizations
Board Orientation & Governance
Board orientation materials, governance documents, and training support that turn a well-meaning board into a working one.
Every executive director knows the gap between the board they have and the board they need. What’s less discussed: that gap is usually a documentation gap before it’s a people gap.
New members join with goodwill and no map. Expectations live in folklore. The fundraising role was mentioned once, vaguely, at recruitment. Governance documents exist but read like they were written to be filed rather than followed. My work closes that gap in writing: orientation handbooks that make a new member useful by their second meeting, expectations that are specific enough to be met, and governance language in plain English that people can actually follow.
This is fundraising work in disguise — organizations with oriented, activated boards raise more, because the board finally knows its part. It’s why board orientation and governance sits alongside grants and strategy in my consulting practice, and why the organizations I support long-term almost always end up here.
